Best British Curriculum Schools in Kuala Lumpur: Fees & Guide 2026

Updated 2026-06-138 min readBy Global Investments Editorial

Kuala Lumpur's British curriculum sector is one of the most developed in South-East Asia. Five schools now offer the full British National Curriculum pathway from Early Years through to Cambridge IGCSE and A-Levels, with a sixth preparing to open. For British expat families, the key decisions are which curriculum type fits best, where each school sits geographically, and — especially at secondary level — how to manage the significant demand pressures on the most sought-after schools.

This guide focuses specifically on schools delivering the British curriculum: Alice Smith School, Garden International School (GIS), British International School of Kuala Lumpur (BSKL), Reigate Grammar School KL (opened 2025), and Cheltenham College KL (opened 2026). Schools offering the IB or American curriculum are covered separately in our IB schools guide and international schools hub guide.

Why British Curriculum in KL?

For families who expect to return to the UK — or move to another British-curriculum country — continuity of education is the primary driver. A child who studies the British National Curriculum in KL sits the same Cambridge IGCSE examinations as their peers in Birmingham or Edinburgh. Their grades are reported on the same A*–U scale, UCAS processes their application identically, and UK universities have decades of experience evaluating A-Level results from KL's leading schools.

The IB Diploma is also widely accepted by UK universities, but requires more adjustment at the curriculum level, particularly in subjects like English Language and Literature where the A-Level tradition differs. Families planning UK university applications who want the most straightforward pathway typically favour A-Levels in KL — and the results data from Alice Smith and GIS suggests they are well served.

COBIS and CIS Accreditation

When evaluating any British curriculum school abroad, COBIS (Council of British International Schools) accreditation is the primary quality mark. It is not a marketing badge: COBIS member schools undergo inspection and must meet defined standards for teaching, safeguarding, governance, and curriculum delivery.

CIS (Council of International Schools) accreditation adds a further layer of international governance review and is the standard used by universities and governments worldwide to identify credible international schools. Alice Smith, GIS, and BSKL all hold both COBIS and CIS accreditations. When evaluating newer schools, checking whether they are working towards or have achieved these accreditations is worthwhile.

Alice Smith School

Alice Smith was founded in 1946, making it the oldest British international school in Malaysia and one of the oldest in South-East Asia. Its longevity reflects a sustained commitment to British educational values — and a parent and alumni community that is deeply invested in the school's reputation.

Campuses. The Primary campus sits on Jalan Bellamy in central KL, close to Bangsar — a convenient location for families in the southern residential belt. The Secondary campus is at Seri Kembangan in Selangor, approximately 20 km south-east of the city centre. The commute between the two campuses is a practical consideration for families with children at both levels.

Curriculum. British National Curriculum from Reception through Year 9, then Cambridge IGCSE (Years 10–11) and A-Levels (Years 12–13). A-Levels only at Sixth Form — no IB Diploma option.

Fees 2026-27 (selected years):

Year Group Annual Fee (MYR) Approx. GBP
Reception 69,180 £11,825
Years 1–2 89,070 £15,225
Years 3–6 97,410 £16,650
Years 7–9 112,950 £19,300
Years 10–13 122,370 £20,925

SST (6%) applies to all year groups above MYR 60,000. One-off costs include: application MYR 1,500, enrolment MYR 20,000 (non-refundable, plus 6% SST), and a refundable deposit of MYR 24,000 for Years 1–13. Sibling discounts of 3% apply to annual fees from the second child, rising to 6% from the third and 10% from the fourth.

Results 2025. IGCSE: 76% of grades A*/A (grades 9–7); 57% at A* (grades 9–8). A-Level: 46.8% A*/A; 70.5% A*/B. University destinations include Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, LSE, and Edinburgh.

Availability 2026-27. This is the critical constraint. Years 10, 11, and 13 are fully CLOSED. Years 7, 8, and 9 are on a wait pool. Open with limited spaces: Years 5–6 and Year 12. Secondary-age families must plan well in advance. For 2027-28, limited spaces are expected in Years 7–10 but Years 10–11 remain closed.

Garden International School (GIS)

Garden International School was founded in 1951 and is the second-oldest British international school in Malaysia. Its Secondary and Sixth Form campus is in Mont Kiara, KL's largest expat enclave, which gives GIS a natural community of families who settle in that area.

Campuses. Primary at Bukit Kiara; Secondary and Sixth Form at Jalan Kiara 3, Mont Kiara.

Curriculum. British curriculum from Nursery through Year 11 (IGCSE), then a choice of A-Levels or IB Diploma at Sixth Form. This is a genuine differentiator: families uncertain about university destination (UK versus US, Canada, or Australia) can keep both pathways open until Year 11 before committing.

Accreditations. COBIS, CIS, WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges), and FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia) membership.

Fees 2026-27 (selected years):

Year Group Annual Fee (MYR) Approx. GBP
Reception 62,340 £10,660
Year 1 85,590 £14,630
Years 3–4 97,830 £16,725
Years 7–8 118,170 £20,200
Years 10–11 (IGCSE) 126,870 £21,690
Years 12–13 (A-Level/IB) 126,870 £21,690

An EAL (English as an Additional Language) surcharge of MYR 13,130–18,360 per year applies for Years 7–9 where additional language support is required. One-off costs: application MYR 1,590; registration MYR 10,000 (Nursery/Reception) or MYR 20,000 (Years 1–13); a refundable deposit equivalent to one term's tuition.

Results 2024. IGCSE: 100% pass rate; record 99% earned at least one A*/A; 72% of all grades at A or A*. University placements have included Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, UCL, and LSE across 12 countries.

British International School of Kuala Lumpur (BSKL)

BSKL is operated by Nord Anglia Education, one of the world's largest premium international school operators. It is located in Tropicana, Petaling Jaya, in the north-western suburban belt.

Curriculum. English National Curriculum EYFS through to Cambridge IGCSE and A-Levels. Nord Anglia's collaboration programmes with MIT (STEAM integration) and Juilliard (performing arts) are distinctive additions not found at the other British schools.

Accreditations. COBIS and CIS.

Fees 2026-27:

Year Group Annual Fee (MYR) Approx. GBP
Pre-Nursery/Nursery (Age 2–3) 58,935 £10,075
Reception (Age 4) 71,245 £12,180
Year 1 72,370 £12,375
Years 2–6 94,300 £16,120
Years 7–9 106,790 £18,255
Years 10–11 125,425 £21,440
Years 12–13 127,605 £21,815

BSKL applies SST (6%) across all year groups, including those below MYR 60,000. One-off: application MYR 1,500; family enrolment MYR 18,000 (non-refundable). School bus transport covering 16 zones costs MYR 6,900/year roundtrip.

Availability. BSKL is generally better placed than Alice Smith to accommodate corporate relocations, though it too experiences demand pressure at secondary level. Families with corporate assignment packages often find BSKL the most accessible of the premium British schools.

Reigate Grammar School KL (RGSKL) — Opened August 2025

Reigate Grammar School is a well-regarded independent school in Surrey, founded in 1675. Its KL campus opened in August 2025 in the Kajang 2 township, approximately 30 km south-east of central KL.

RGSKL offers the British curriculum from EYFS to Sixth Form, with Cambridge IGCSE and A-Levels. Annual fees range from MYR 50,400 to MYR 108,630, with SST applicable above the MYR 60,000 threshold. The first cohort is approximately 450 students, with class sizes under 20. Facilities include eight science laboratories and a swimming pool.

The Kajang location is further from KL's main expat areas than most families prefer, and the school has not yet accumulated results data. However, it offers smaller classes and lower fees than the established premium schools, and the Reigate brand carries academic credibility. It may be a strong option for families in the south-east of KL or Selangor.

Cheltenham College KL (CCIKL) — Opened 2026

Cheltenham College UK was founded in 1841 and has a strong boarding school tradition. Its KL campus opened in central KL in early 2026, which is significant: it is the first British heritage brand school in a genuinely central KL location. All established British premium schools are in suburban areas.

CCIKL offers the British curriculum from EYFS to A-Levels (ages 3–18). Fees had not been published at the time of writing — contact the school directly. As a new institution, it has no results data yet, but the central location and Cheltenham heritage make it worth monitoring for families who would otherwise face long commutes to suburban campuses.

British Curriculum vs IB: Which Is Right for Your Family?

The choice between British curriculum (IGCSE/A-Level) and IB is not merely academic. Key considerations:

Depth versus breadth. A-Levels involve typically three or four subjects studied in depth over two years. The IB Diploma requires six subjects across different domains, theory of knowledge, an extended essay, and CAS (creativity, activity, service). British families accustomed to A-Level depth sometimes find the IB's breadth refreshing; others find it stressful.

UK university applications. Both are well-accepted by UK universities. Russell Group universities typically make IB offers of 36–38 points for competitive courses. A-Level offers are more familiar to British applicants and tend to feel more straightforward. For medicine and Oxbridge, A-Level routes are arguably better understood.

US university ambitions. If your child may apply to US universities, IB is often considered advantageous. GIS's option to choose between A-Levels and IB at Sixth Form is therefore a genuinely useful hedge.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Alice Smith and Garden International School for British families?

Both are well-established COBIS/CIS-accredited British schools with strong IGCSE and A-Level results. Alice Smith offers A-Levels only at Sixth Form; GIS offers both A-Levels and IB Diploma. GIS Secondary is in Mont Kiara (large expat area); Alice Smith Secondary is in Seri Kembangan (further south-east). Both have significant secondary demand — apply early to both.

Are COBIS and CIS accreditation important when choosing a British school in KL?

Yes. COBIS (Council of British International Schools) accreditation confirms the school genuinely delivers British curriculum to UK standards. CIS (Council of International Schools) adds international governance oversight. Alice Smith, GIS, and BSKL all hold both accreditations — a meaningful quality signal. Newer schools may be working towards accreditation.

How do British school A-Level results in KL compare to UK schools?

Alice Smith achieved 46.8% A*/A grades at A-Level in 2025, and GIS has had strong results across multiple years. The UK national A-Level average for A* was around 19% in 2024. Even allowing for selection effects, KL's top British schools consistently outperform the UK national average.

Are there British curriculum schools in KL in central locations?

Until 2026 most British schools were suburban. Cheltenham College KL opened in central KL in early 2026 — the first British heritage brand school in a central location. Alice Smith Primary is also relatively central (Jalan Bellamy, near Bangsar).
