GCSEs and A Levels in Cyprus: A Guide for Expat Families

Cambridge IGCSE and A Level qualifications are the backbone of English-medium secondary education in Cyprus. For families relocating from the UK or from other countries where a British-style education is valued, this means children can continue on a familiar qualification pathway without interruption — and the certificates they receive are identical in standing to those achieved by pupils sitting the same examinations in London or Sydney.

This guide explains how these qualifications work in the Cyprus context, which schools offer them, what subject availability looks like and how the results are used for university applications.

IGCSE vs GCSE: Understanding the Difference

GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the UK qualification taken at around age 15–16.

IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the Cambridge International version of the same qualification, designed for students in international schools worldwide. Key differences:

  • IGCSEs are typically more examination-focused, with less internal coursework assessment than some GCSE specifications
  • Some IGCSE syllabuses include additional content suited to international contexts
  • Both are graded on the same 9–1 scale (or, for older Cambridge specifications, A*–G)
  • UK universities and UCAS treat them as fully equivalent

In Cyprus, virtually all English-medium private schools offer Cambridge IGCSE rather than the UK domestic GCSE, as this is the specification designed for international delivery. The practical distinction is minimal for university purposes.

The IGCSE Years: Key Stage 4 (Ages 14–16)

Students typically begin their IGCSE course in Years 10 and 11 (or equivalent Cyprus school years), studying a range of subjects over two years before sitting external Cambridge examinations.

Compulsory subjects at most Cyprus English-medium schools include:

  • English Language and Literature
  • Mathematics
  • Modern Greek (required by Cyprus schools for integration and the Apolytirion pathway)
  • Physical Education

Optional subject groups typically include:

  • Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Combined Science)
  • Humanities (History, Geography, Economics, Business Studies)
  • Languages (French, German, Spanish, Arabic and others at some schools)
  • Arts (Art and Design, Music, Drama)
  • Computing and ICT

The number of subjects varies by school: most Cyprus schools prepare students for six to nine IGCSE subjects. This is broadly comparable with the UK, where eight to ten GCSEs is typical.

Examinations are held in the May/June Cambridge session. Results are issued in August, in line with the global Cambridge schedule.

The A Level Years: Key Stage 5 (Ages 16–18)

A Levels are the primary post-16 qualification at most Cyprus English-medium secondary schools. Students typically study three or four subjects over two years, sitting external Cambridge examinations in the May/June session of their final year (and sometimes the preceding year for AS qualifications).

Subject availability varies by school. Larger schools such as American Academy Limassol and The English School Nicosia typically offer a wide range — fifteen to twenty or more subjects. Smaller schools may have a narrower selection; families should check that the subjects needed for their child's intended university course are available before committing to a school.

AS Level qualifications (after Year 12) are available at some schools and can form part of a UCAS application, though the value of standalone AS Levels in UK university admissions has reduced since 2017 reforms. Most students aim for three full A Levels in Year 13.

Cyprus Apolytirion Alongside British Qualifications

Several of the most prestigious Cyprus schools — The English School Nicosia and The Grammar School Nicosia in particular — offer pupils the Cyprus Apolytirion (the national secondary leaving certificate) alongside Cambridge qualifications. This dual-qualification outcome has two advantages:

  1. It opens the door to Cypriot state universities, which require the Apolytirion for domestic admission
  2. It demonstrates linguistic and cultural integration (Modern Greek is compulsory for the Apolytirion)

The Apolytirion is typically held alongside IGCSE at the end of Year 11. For families who expect to remain in Cyprus long-term, the dual qualification is worth pursuing if the school offers it.

Examination Results and University Applications

Cambridge IGCSE and A Level results from Cyprus follow the same global schedule as UK results:

  • IGCSE results: published in August of the Year 11 examination year
  • A Level results: published in August of the Year 13 examination year, with UCAS confirmation of places on A Level results day

University applications via UCAS are made in the autumn of Year 13, with an October deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and medicine, and January as the main deadline for other courses. Cyprus-based students apply through UCAS in exactly the same way as international applicants. See university admissions from Cyprus international schools for a detailed UCAS walkthrough.

Grades and the 9–1 Scale

Since Cambridge's reforms, IGCSE grades are reported on the 9–1 scale (9 being highest), matching the UK domestic GCSE grading. UK universities specify minimum grade requirements using this scale — e.g. "AAABBB at A Level with a minimum of 5 at grade 6 or above in IGCSE" is a common type of conditional offer phrasing. Cyprus IGCSE graduates are subject to the same requirements.

External Examination Fees

Cambridge external examination fees are an additional cost beyond school tuition. As a rough guide, fees per subject are typically in the range of €70–€100 for IGCSE subjects and somewhat more for A Level, though the school usually co-ordinates payment and passes through the actual Cambridge fee. Always ask schools to include examination fees in the total cost of attendance quotation.

Considerations for Students Joining Mid-Course

Families relocating to Cyprus mid-way through a GCSE or A Level course face a curriculum reconciliation challenge. Different countries use different examination boards (Edexcel, AQA, OCR in the UK; Cambridge International in Cyprus), and subject syllabuses do not map perfectly onto each other. Schools in Cyprus are experienced at handling this:

  • Most will assess a new student's level and place them appropriately
  • For students partway through a UK GCSE course, the school may adapt the teaching to the Cambridge syllabus with minimal disruption
  • For students already in A Level Year 2, joining mid-course is more difficult; some families choose to complete the year in the UK before relocating

Frequently asked questions

Are GCSEs and A Levels available in Cyprus?

Yes. The majority of English-medium private schools in Cyprus offer Cambridge IGCSE (the international equivalent of GCSE) and Cambridge A Levels. These qualifications are fully equivalent to those taken in the UK and are accepted by universities worldwide.

What is the difference between GCSE and IGCSE?

IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the Cambridge International version of the GCSE, specifically designed for international students. UK universities and UCAS treat them as equivalent. In practice, the IGCSE often has a higher proportion of examination assessment and slightly different coursework requirements.

Which Cyprus schools are official Cambridge examination centres?

Several Cyprus schools are registered Cambridge International Schools and examination centres, including Heritage Private School (Cambridge International Fellowship Centre), American Academy Limassol, Foley's School and others. Being an examination centre means students sit official Cambridge examinations on-site rather than travelling to an external venue.

Can A Level students apply to US universities from Cyprus?

Yes, A Level qualifications are accepted by US universities and are generally well-regarded. Some US universities also expect SAT or ACT scores alongside A Levels. Students applying to highly selective US institutions should discuss testing strategy with their school's university counsellor.
