IB Schools in Dubai: 2025 Results, Options & Admissions Guide

Dubai is one of the strongest IB Diploma jurisdictions in the world. While the IB is a global qualification, results vary significantly by country and school — and the UAE's performance is consistently exceptional, driven by a combination of highly motivated pupils, strong teaching, and the resources that Dubai's private school sector invests in its best schools.

This guide covers every significant IB school in Dubai, the 2025 examination results in detail, how to choose between IB and A-Levels, and the difference between a full IB continuum school and those that offer only the Diploma Programme at sixth form.

The IB Diploma Programme: What It Involves

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two-year pre-university qualification for students aged 16–18. It is offered in more than 150 countries and is accepted by universities worldwide, including all UK universities.

The Six Subjects

Students study six subjects across six groups:

Group Subject Area Level
Group 1 Language and Literature (usually English) Higher or Standard
Group 2 Language Acquisition (a second language) Higher or Standard
Group 3 Individuals and Societies (History, Economics, Psychology, etc.) Higher or Standard
Group 4 Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc.) Higher or Standard
Group 5 Mathematics Higher or Standard
Group 6 The Arts or an additional subject from Groups 1–4 Higher or Standard

Three subjects must be taken at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). Higher Level subjects involve more content and deeper assessment than Standard Level.

Core Elements

In addition to the six subjects, IB students must complete three compulsory core elements:

Theory of Knowledge (TOK): A philosophical course examining how we know what we know across different disciplines. Assessed by an exhibition and an essay.

Extended Essay (EE): A 4,000-word independent research essay in a subject of the student's choice. Equivalent in scope to a first undergraduate essay.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): A programme of activities outside the classroom — creative pursuits, physical activities, and community service projects — documented throughout the two years.

Scoring

The maximum IB Diploma score is 45 points: up to 7 points per subject (6 subjects × 7 = 42) plus up to 3 bonus points for TOK and EE combined. Minimum passing score is 24 points. The diploma is failed if a student scores below 12 points at Higher Level in aggregate, or below certain minimum thresholds in individual subjects.

IB Results in Dubai 2025

Dubai's IB schools produced exceptional results in 2025. The UAE national average was 32.63 points — meaningfully above the global average of 30.58 points. This consistent outperformance reflects both the quality of Dubai's IB schools and a strong cohort of motivated pupils.

School 2025 IB Average Pass Rate
JESS (Arabian Ranches & Jumeirah) 38 100%
NLCS Dubai 36.5 100%
Sunmarke School 36.4 100%
Nord Anglia International School Dubai 36
GEMS Wellington International School 36 98%
Repton Dubai 35 100%
UAE national average 32.63
Global average 30.58

JESS's average of 38 points places it among the top IB schools globally. A score of 38 is broadly equivalent to achieving five A*/A grades at A-Level — a consistently exceptional performance that reflects both the school's academic culture and its highly motivated pupil cohort.

IB Schools in Dubai: By Type

Full IB Continuum Schools

A full IB continuum school offers all three IB programmes:

Primary Years Programme (PYP): Ages 3–12 (FS1 to Year 6). An inquiry-based framework that develops internationally minded learners. PYP does not replace the standard primary curriculum — it is a pedagogical approach layered over it.

Middle Years Programme (MYP): Ages 11–16 (Years 7–11). An interdisciplinary framework for secondary education, bridging primary and the Diploma. MYP has increasingly replaced IGCSE at some schools, though many schools run them in parallel or offer IGCSE within an MYP framework.

Diploma Programme (DP): Ages 16–18 (Years 12–13). The formal pre-university qualification described above.

Full IB continuum schools in Dubai include GEMS Wellington International School (Outstanding, IB avg 36, 98% pass) and Hartland International School (Very Good, British/IB dual pathway).

British Curriculum + IB Diploma Only

Many Dubai schools teach British curriculum at primary and secondary level (EYFS, KS1, KS2, IGCSE) and then offer the IB Diploma alongside — or instead of — A-Levels at sixth form.

This approach is common and well-regarded. Students study in a familiar British curriculum environment through their GCSE years, then transition to the IB Diploma for sixth form. Key schools offering this model:

JESS (Arabian Ranches and Jumeirah) — Outstanding. British curriculum through to IGCSE; IB Diploma at sixth form. IB average 38, 100% pass. JESS is arguably the most respected IB school in Dubai.

Nord Anglia International School Dubai — Outstanding. British curriculum through IGCSE; dual A-Level/IB pathway at sixth form. Students choose between A-Levels and IB DP in Year 11.

Repton Dubai — Outstanding. British curriculum with IB DP at sixth form. IB average 35, 100% pass.

Sunmarke School — Very Good. British curriculum with IB DP at sixth form. IB average 36.4, 100% pass. Sunmarke's IB results are outstanding and compare favourably with many schools rated higher by KHDA.

A-Level Only Schools

Some Outstanding British curriculum schools offer only A-Levels, with no IB Diploma option:

Dubai College — A-Levels only. 93.6% A*-B in 2025. Jumeirah College — A-Levels only. 40% A*-A (85% A*-B) in 2025. Kings' School Al Barsha — A-Levels only. Dubai British School — A-Levels only (both campuses).

IB vs A-Levels: A Practical Comparison for UK Families

This is the most common question from British families researching Dubai schools. There is no single correct answer — the better choice depends on your child's academic profile, university aspirations, and personal strengths.

How UK Universities View the IB

UK universities have well-established equivalences for IB grades:

IB Score Approximate A-Level Equivalent
40–45 AAA* to AAA*
38–39 AAA to A*AA
36–37 AAA to A*AA
33–35 ABB to AAB
30–32 BBB to ABB

Russell Group universities are fully familiar with the IB Diploma and actively recruit IB students. Medical schools, Oxford, and Cambridge all accept IB and specify the scores they require for their offer conditions. There is no systematic disadvantage for IB students applying to UK universities.

The IB's breadth is sometimes an advantage: admissions tutors value students who can demonstrate both scientific and humanistic thinking. A student applying for a Humanities degree with strong IB Higher Level Sciences (or vice versa) may stand out in ways that pure A-Level candidates cannot.

Choose A-Levels If...

  • Your child has a defined subject passion and wants to focus exclusively on it
  • They are likely to apply for subjects with very specific A-Level requirements (some engineering programmes specify three A-Levels in STEM subjects)
  • They find the IB's breadth requirement frustrating (being required to study a language or arts subject alongside a science focus)
  • The school in question offers A-Levels but not IB, or the IB school is significantly worse than available A-Level options

Choose IB If...

  • Your child is genuinely academically broad — strong across sciences and humanities
  • They may apply to US universities (US colleges value the IB's breadth highly)
  • They are likely to move internationally and may need a globally portable qualification
  • The IB school available is outstanding (JESS, Nord Anglia, Sunmarke) and the A-Level alternative is weaker

The US University Dimension

For families who think their child may apply to US colleges — or who may move from Dubai to the US — the IB Diploma is significantly advantaged over A-Levels for American university applications. American colleges are highly familiar with the IB, and many award college credit for Higher Level scores of 5 or above. A-Levels, while accepted by US universities, are less well understood in the American system.

IB in Dubai vs the UK

The IB is available at a small number of UK independent schools — including some of the most prestigious — but the majority of UK schools do not offer it. UK state schools rarely offer IB. In Dubai, IB is mainstream within British curriculum schools: several Outstanding schools offer it, and the quality of IB teaching and results is high. Dubai arguably offers better access to IB education than most of the UK.

Frequently asked questions

What IB Diploma average scores did Dubai schools achieve in 2025?

Dubai schools performed strongly in 2025. JESS achieved an average of 38 points with a 100% pass rate, placing it among the world's top IB schools. NLCS Dubai achieved 36.5 (100% pass), Sunmarke 36.4 (100%), Nord Anglia 36, and GEMS Wellington 36 (98% pass). The UAE national average of 32.63 exceeded the global average of 30.58.

Do UK universities prefer A-Levels or IB?

UK universities accept both qualifications and have clear grade equivalences for both. The IB Diploma is well understood by admissions tutors at Russell Group universities. Neither qualification has a systematic advantage for UK entry — the choice should depend on the student's academic profile and likely university destinations.

What is the difference between a full IB continuum school and IB DP only?

A full IB continuum school offers the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP, ages 3–12), IB Middle Years Programme (MYP, ages 11–16), and IB Diploma Programme (DP, ages 16–18). An IB DP-only school offers the Diploma at sixth form but teaches other curricula at primary and secondary level. The continuum approach offers greater consistency; DP-only is often offered alongside A-Levels as a sixth form choice at British curriculum schools.

Is the IB Diploma harder than A-Levels?

The IB requires breadth across six subjects, Theory of Knowledge, an Extended Essay, and CAS activities — a demanding workload. A-Levels focus depth in three or four subjects. Many students find the IB Diploma more challenging overall, but students who are well-rounded and comfortable across multiple disciplines may thrive in it. Students who are highly specialised — wanting to focus entirely on sciences, for example — often find A-Levels better suited to their strengths.
