IB Schools in Vienna: The International Baccalaureate Guide

For internationally mobile families, the International Baccalaureate is often the natural choice — a single, coherent framework recognised the world over, so a child can move between IB schools in different countries without starting from scratch. Vienna is well served here, with several long-established IB World Schools and the full range of IB programmes available somewhere in the city.

Global Investments advises relocating families worldwide, and the IB is the pathway we are asked about most, precisely because it travels so well.

The four IB programmes

The IB is a continuum spanning the whole of school. Understanding the four programmes helps you match a school to your child's stage.

Programme Stage Focus
Primary Years (PYP) Early years to ~age 11 Inquiry-led learning across disciplines
Middle Years (MYP) ~Grades 6–10 Broad, connected secondary study
Diploma (DP) Grades 11–12 Six subjects plus core; university preparation
Career-related (CP) Grades 11–12 DP-linked study with a career specialism

The Diploma Programme is the best known. It requires six subjects across language, sciences, humanities, mathematics and the arts, plus three core elements: Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). It is demanding but produces well-rounded, independent learners.

Vienna's IB World Schools

Vienna's principal IB schools each have a distinct profile:

  • Vienna International School (VIS) — one of the largest and most diverse, delivering the PYP, MYP and DP to ages 3–18.
  • Danube International School (DISV) — Vienna's first fully accredited IB World School, offering the PYP, MYP and DP in a central location.
  • AMADEUS International School — notable for offering all four IB programmes (PYP, MYP, DP and CP) alongside an integrated music and arts academy, with day and boarding options.
  • American International School Vienna (AIS) — offers the IB Diploma as an option within its American college-preparatory programme.

Beyond the city, St. Gilgen International School near Salzburg leads to the IB Diploma in a boarding setting (note it is not in Vienna). Always confirm current programme authorisation with each school, as IB status is reviewed periodically.

Why the IB works for mobile families

The IB's great strength is continuity. A family that moves every few years can keep a child within the same educational philosophy and assessment framework, easing transitions that would otherwise be disruptive. The Diploma is also widely accepted: UK universities make points-based offers through UCAS, and institutions across Europe and worldwide recognise it. Our university admissions guide explains how this works in practice.

Choosing among the IB schools

With several strong IB schools, the decision often comes down to location, fees, specialisms (such as AMADEUS's music focus) and availability. Our fees guide and admissions guide help you compare cost and process, and our district guide shows where to live for the best access. The hub guide brings it all together.
